WEST NILE VIRUS IN HORSES & OTHER ANIMALS

Horses are susceptible to West Nile virus and about 1/3 of the horses that develop symptoms will die. Click the following links for information on WNV and horses from the California Department of Food and Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. A vaccine for horses is available through your veterinarian and is strongly recommended by veterinary public health officials. Dogs and cats appear to be resistant to the virus unless they already have weakened immune systems due to another illness. Pet birds may be susceptible and should be protected from mosquito bites.
